![]() ![]() What is the purpose of this spell? It's for killing Beholders. Since advantage (from being unseen) and disadvantage (from being unable to see) cancel out, I'm struggling to find a use for Fog Cloud. Fog Cloud would cancel out all existing advantage/disadvantage, making everyone attack normally. #7 does work because gaze attacks do require sight. #8 doesn't work because Magic Missile can only target creatures you can see. ![]() Adding more disadvantage is doesn't make it worse.ĮDIT: Wow, I must have taken a long time to make this list there weren't any responses when I started.ĮDIT: Wow, I must have taken a long time to make this list there weren't any responses when I started.#1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 don't work because the disadvantage your enemy gets for attacking blindly is canceled out by the advantage they get for being unseen. Denying foe advantage is more important then receiving disadvantage.ħ) Foe uses gaze attacks, and being heavily obscured prevents this (admittedly this is a house rule, but I believe being heavily obscured is akin to blindness.)Ĩ) Castor/Ally is a wizard who favors Magic Missile, and doesn't care.ĩ. Castor/Ally can then attack with AoE or saving throw attacks.Ħ) Foe is a rogue (or rouge-like). Caster casts Fog Cloud on Foe (remember 120ft range), giving disadvantage to hit. Its more important to not get hit than to hit.Fog Cloud can cover retreat, granting disadvantage on any opportunity attacks.ĥ) Castor/Ally are being attacked at range by Foe. Foe is a heavy hitter and his targets are low on hit points. Caster casts Fog Cloud on self, giving Foe disadvantage to hit. Castor and Ally can attack with abilities that force saving throws, rather than attack rolls.Ĥ) Castor/Ally are being attacked in melee by Foe. Castor and Ally can work on escaping or healing rather than fighting.ģ) Castor/Ally are being attacked at range by Foe. Castor and Ally can step out of Fog Cloud to attack at range, and then return to cover.Ģ) Castor/Ally are being attacked at range by Foe. Still, for such a cheap slot and with the mechanics it offers, Fog Cloud is a great option for a lot of characters. The advantage on attacks one makes and disadvantage on attacks made against you don't always cancel out.Ĭonsider the following scenarios, Caster casts fog cloud, Ally is allied to the Castor, Foe is against the caster:ġ) Castor/Ally are being attacked at range by Foe. That paired with how easily it can be dispersed makes it difficult to keep using in the upper tiers regularly. My biggest issue with Fog Cloud is its concentration requirement. Fog Clouds placed on ranged enemy combatants can force them into vulnerable positions for your melee buddies while being within an area prone to giant AOE damage effects like Fireball. Paired with blindsight, or other means of getting around the blindness effect, creatures can have advantage on all their attacks, while enemies will have disadvantage on their attacks. The second major use case is as a means of getting tactical combat advantages on enemies. At its worst here, though, they pick out your sound and can move through the cloud fast enough to keep pace. At its best, Fog Cloud can provide cover to bamboozle enemies, leaving them dumbfounded and fumbling trying to figure out which of the four possible directions you could have gone in. Sounds may still give them away, but with some coordinated planning or decent stealth checks, Fog Cloud can facilitate escape maneuvers or quick crimes. This breaks down into two major use cases, with the primary use case being as a tool to briefly obscure vision.īlinded creatures for even just a few seconds can give the party time to relocate, hide, or perform tasks with discretion. Blinded creatures can’t see, automatically failing ability checks that require sight, have disadvantage on attack rolls, and grant enemies advantage on attack rolls against them. Heavily obscured areas treat creatures within them as if they were blinded. It’s such a useful little tool to have in your back pocket that can get you out of sticky situations for just a single 1st level spell slot. Review by Sam West, Cloud has a special place in my heart. ![]()
